Salicylaldehyde is a colorless or slightly brown oily liquid with a bitter almond aroma and a burning taste. It has a boiling point of 196°C, a melting point of -7°C, and a flash point of 76°C. It is soluble in alcohol, ether, benzene, and most organic solvents, and slightly soluble in water. It turns orange-red in sulfuric acid and purple in ferric chloride. It is used for the quantitative determination of fusel oil in alcohol. It is a colorimetric developer for the determination of nickel, copper, iron, and vanadium. It is also used to identify o-aniline and p-aniline. It is primarily used in food flavorings. It is also used as an analytical chemical reagent, a gasoline additive, and in organic synthesis and the fragrance industry. It is a commonly used reagent in organic analysis and synthesis. Salicylaldehyde is an important fine chemical product with a wide range of uses. It is widely used in the synthesis of pesticides, medicines, spices, chelating agents, dye intermediates, etc. In terms of pesticides, halogenated salicylaldehyde, salicylaldehyde and benzene are all important raw materials for the preparation of herbicides, insecticides, fungicides and preservatives. A new type of nematicide currently under development is also synthesized using salicylaldehyde as a raw material and 2-aminothiazole Schiff base; in terms of medicine, salicylaldehyde can be used to prepare antibacterial drugs, as an intermediate for the production of racemic pituitary gonadotropin drugs, and for the production of adrenergic drugs and antitussive drugs. Salicylaldehyde is also used to prepare coumarin and prepare spices such as ionone. Coumarin, 6-benzylated coumarin, 3-methylcoumarin, etc. synthesized from salicylaldehyde as raw material have been widely used in soaps, detergents, flavorings, candies and tobacco industries. Abroad, salicylaldehyde is also an important component for the synthesis of plant trace elements. Salicylaldehyde can also form chelating agents with various metals and is widely used in the petroleum industry. Many adducts of salicylaldehyde can improve the high-temperature stability of fuel oil, gasoline and petroleum.
Nitrosalicylaldehydes such as 3-nitrosalicylicylaldehyde, 5-nitrosalicylicylaldehyde and 3,5-dinitrosalicylicylaldehyde prepared by the reaction of salicylaldehyde with nitric acid are all intermediates of dyes. Salicylaldehyde can also be used to prepare aromatic azo dyes. In addition, salicylaldehyde and its derivatives are raw materials for spirobenzonan organic photosensitive materials and can be used to synthesize durable hair finishing agents. They are also used to prepare porous plastics and as antioxidants for plastics, metal passivators for the oil refining industry, etc. Salicylaldehyde itself has many uses. For example, it is widely used in electroplating processes as a brightener and leveling agent. Low concentrations of salicylaldehyde are often used as a preservative in flavors and fragrances due to its strong ability to reduce bacterial activity.
In China, salicylaldehyde is primarily used in the preparation of coumarin, of which my country is the second largest exporter after France. Furthermore, because salicylaldehyde is often used as a key raw material in food, beverages, tobacco, alcohol, toothpaste, cosmetics, soaps, detergents, and other products, people have higher requirements for the quality of the raw materials used in the production of these products. Therefore, researching and developing economical and green processes for the production of salicylaldehyde is of great practical significance.
